The first step in treating sleep apnea is recognizing and diagnosing the disease.  

If you suspect you or someone you know might have sleep apnea, talk to your healthcare provider without delay.


Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness at inappropriate times (e.g. while at work, reading, driving, etc.)
  • Observed apneas
  • Witnessed breathing pauses
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Frequent need to go to the bathroom at night
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings or depression
  • Poor job or school performance
  • Inability to concentrate on driving or work tasks
  • Learning and/or memory difficulties
  • Sexual dysfunction


Contributing Indicators of Sleep Apnea

  • Obesity (BMI greater than 30) check your Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Large neck (greater than 17 inches in men, less than 16 inches for women
  • Over 40 years old
  • Small jaw
  • Upper airway abnormalities
  • Family history of OSA
