Do I Need Oxygen?

Oxygen is a prescription just like any other type of medication. If you think you need oxygen, the first step is to talk to your doctor.

Some symptoms you may want to discuss with your physician are:

  • Decreased ability to exercise
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Periods of disorientation
  • Memory loss

In most cases, supplemental oxygen is prescribed when chronic pulmonary issues, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), fibrosis, Emphysema, or lung cancer, causes hypoxia. Hypoxia is when the lungs aren’t able to transfer enough oxygen into the bloodstream. Supplemental oxygen adds more pure oxygen to the air in the lungs, making it easier for your lungs to deliver it to your bloodstream. This can help with shortness of breath, energy level, and the general wellness of your body.

Some people only need supplemental oxygen when they are sleeping or exercising, while others need it all the time. And just like any other medication, it is important you use it exactly how the doctor instructs.

Oxygen can help improve your quality of life by allowing you to breathe easier and reduce stress on your body.
