Getting Oxygen Therapy

Home Services Home Oxygen Therapy Getting Oxygen Therapy

The first step in getting supplemental oxygen is talking to your doctor.

He or she can check you for hypoxia by performing an arterial blood gas study (ABG) or using pulse oximetry testing

If you see your doctor in the clinic, and you are in a stable respiratory condition (don’t have any acute issues such as pneumonia) or if you are in the hospital, they may perform a 3-part pulse oximetry test.

  • First, resting on room air.
  • Second, with exertion on room air.
  • Third, with exertion on supplemental oxygen.

Exertion can be in the form of a walk (up to 6 minutes) or any activity that causes shortness of breath. If your oxygen saturation level (SpO2) is at or below 88%, you may be a good candidate for supplemental oxygen.

The doctor will need to document your need for supplemental oxygen and your diagnosis to send to the insurance company along with the test results.

If you and the doctor decide supplemental oxygen would be beneficial, simply request your order be faxed to Oxygen One along with your contact information, physician notes, and testing information.

Once we receive this information we will call your insurance for you to verify benefits and make sure we are in-network with your plan. We will give you a call to discuss your lifestyles and needs and then we will set up a time to come to your home. During this home visit, we will demonstrate how to use your new oxygen system and make sure you understand all the components. Oxygen One’s primary focus is helping you to achieve a healthy and active lifestyle while on your oxygen.

If you have any questions about the process or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to call our office at (262) 521-2202.
