Winter is On Its Way!

Take precautions this winter

No matter how much you try not to think about it... winter is coming. The cold weather can cause difficulties for anyone, but for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) changes in weather can affect their health and trigger symptoms.

If you go outside, here are some things that you should remember:

  • Wear shoes with traction on the soles, instead of smooth soles. Be sure to always use sidewalks and cleared paths in parking lots.
  • Dress warmly. If you are cold you will try to hurry or tense up your muscles. Both of these can affect your balance.
  • Wear a mask. COPD patients have trouble breathing the cold air and should wear a mask to cover their mouth and nose. If masks are too hot, try a scarf.
  • Keep oxygen tubing warm. Take proactive steps to keep your lungs warm by keeping your oxygen tubing under warm clothing. Your body heat will keep the oxygen from getting cold.

Just remember, as winter approaches spring won't be far behind. Stay well and take care of yourself this winter!
