Common Oxygen Therapy Myths

By Sarah Murphy

Being prescribed oxygen can come with its share of doubts. There are tons of oxygen myths out there, which can create even more doubts. That's why we've decided to share the facts about oxygen therapy, debunking those silly myths.

"I can't live a normal life while on oxygen."

You'll definitely be living a different life while on oxygen, but who said it couldn't be normal? Oxygen is prescribed to help you live a normal and long life. Oxygen One is here to help you live as independently as possible while on service with us.

"Oxygen will cause a fire."

Oxygen is not flammable; it supports a flame but does not cause fires. It's perfectly safe when it's used properly.

"Oxygen is addictive."

Oxygen is not addictive. Too much oxygen can make you drowsy and even damage your lungs. Never change the flow rate without your health-care provider's approval.

"POCs are bulky and heavy."

Many oxygen concentrators are more on the heavy side because they're meant for therapy in the home. POCs are much lighter than oxygen concentrators because they're meant for patients who are more mobile outside of the home. You can check out some of our POCs in our catalog for comparison.

"I'll never get to leave home."

Most oxygen patients do get to leave home. Portable Oxygen Concentrators are designed for patients to do just that. Depending on your prescription, you can have a very active lifestyle.

"I can't travel with oxygen."

You CAN travel with oxygen! It just takes some careful planning. Visit our Traveling with Oxygen page for more information.

Oxygen is meant to help you breathe easier so that you can lead a happier and healthier life. If you have been prescribed oxygen, then not using it would be more of an inconvenience than using it. Our Oxygen One team is here to help you through this transition.
