A Home Sleep Test (HST) is a device that measures several different parameters while you are sleeping to determine if you stop breathing or experience apneas.  HSTs are approved for use by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and if used appropriately, are as accurate at diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea as a facility based study known as a polysomnography (PSG).  In most cases, you do not need to go to the lab in addition to an HST. 

There are many advantages to using an HST over a PSG.

  • Cost—Traditionally, HSTs are a fraction of the cost of a PSG.  Many major insurances now cover the HST so the out-of-pocket cost to the patient is significantly less.
  • Convenience and Comfort—HSTs can be done anywhere, including the comfort of your own home.  Not only does this allow you to follow a normal routine, but you are able to fall asleep in your own bed.  Many individuals are reluctant to go to a lab or hospital to be studied.  HSTs provide an option for these patients to be tested and treated at home.
  • Ease of Use—While a PSG measures over 20 channels, the HST only measures the channels necessary to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea.  This means the device is simple to setup and use.  It also allows for increased freedom and a more natural sleeping experience.
  • Accessibility and Timeliness—In most cases, a PSG requires a trip to your primary care physician, a sleep specialist, a few weeks wait to be scheduled in the lab, another appointment with the sleep specialist and a few weeks to be set up on a CPAP.  With the HST, a referral from your primary care physician to SAS will initiate the testing and treatment in one streamlined process minimizing the multiple appointments and time spent trying to obtain care.
