Bob Spellman Award
The Bob Spellman Award is given annually to honor a patient who “Inspires
other oxygen patients to live life fully.”
Jim Spellman’s father, Bob Spellman, was the inspiration for Oxygen One.
Despite two lung diseases— emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis—Bob lived a very
active life and remained on oxygen for over ten years. With his liquid oxygen
system, Bob traveled throughout the U.S. and even took a cruise to Hawaii. Bob
attended pulmonary rehab twice a week for eight years, during which he was never
hospitalized. His active role in rehab maintained the quality of his life for
many years. Pulmonary rehab kept his lungs in shape; the friendship and support
from fellow oxygen users kept his attitude in shape. When Jim and Jill started
Oxygen One in the Milwaukee area in 1999, Bob was alive to see them help their
first patient. Bob was their number one fan, cheerleader and COPD fighter.
The Bob Spellman Award honors Bob’s life and the gifts he gave us. It
is meant to recognize individuals who exemplify an incredible dedication to
fighting their disease and helping others to do the same. We hope to pass
on Bob’s motivation and encourage others to live active and fulfilling lives,
like Bob did.
