Oxygen

Q: My back up tank reads empty, but I’ve never used it before.

A: Your tank most likely has oxygen.  Most gauges only show the tank’s contents when it is turned on.

Q: Is it possible to travel with oxygen?

A: Absolutely.  Many people with oxygen travel, it just takes a little more planning and preparation ahead of time.  If you have a trip coming up, or want to plan one, call an Oxygen One Patient Service Representative or for more information, see our Travel Page

Q: My doctor told me to use my oxygen with exertion?  What does that mean?

A: Exertion is indicated anytime your heart rate is elevated from physical activity or excessive movement and your body needs more oxygen.  Exercise isn’t the only form of exertion.  Examples would be shaving, showering, brushing your teeth, walking up the stairs, carrying groceries, eating or even talking.  If you are becoming short of breath while performing an activity, it is most likely a form of exertion.

Q: Can I use more or less oxygen when I feel I need it?

A: No.  Oxygen is a prescription drug and, just like any other medication, you should only use it as prescribed.  You can only use more or less if your doctor advises you to do so.

Q: How often should I change my cannulas and tubing?

A: To prevent the spread of infections, the cannula you use most frequently should be changed every two weeks, long extension tubing every two months.

Q: Can’t I just wash out my tubing and re-use it?

A: No.  If your tubing or cannulas get water inside them, they may become blocked and not work properly.

Q: Can I pick up tanks from the office?

A: Yes.  Please feel free to, but please call Oxygen One in advance whenever possible so we can have the tanks ready for you.

Q: If I don’t like the system I have, can I change it?

A: Changes in equipment are based upon the patient’s order and usage, ability to trigger and tolerate varying delivery devices, physical and mental faculties, and general health and mobility of the patient. Each patient is treated as a unique individual and each request for equipment changes is addressed individually as well.

CPAP

Q: My CPAP mask is making the bridge of my nose sore, what can I do?

A: Loosen the headgear (making sure you maintain a good mask fit) and if necessary protect the area with moleskin or a fabric band-aid.

Q: What can I do about my dry mouth?

A: Increase the humidifier settings on your machine.  If you suspect you’re breathing through your mouth, ask your physician about adding a chinstrap.

Q: My CPAP Mask is leaking, what is wrong?

A: Make sure that the mask is adjusted properly and that you are putting it on correctly.

Make sure you clean the mask daily and wash your face before bed to remove any oils that cause excessive mask wear.  It is also a good idea to replace your mask every 3-6 months.

Q: I have a CPAP unit and have never replaced my supplies, what is the normal process for this?

A: Most insurances cover replacement supplies (mask, headgear, tubing and filter) every 3-6 months.  Call Oxygen One when you need replacement supplies.  We will verify eligibility and ship the supplies you need within 7-10 business days.

*Tip: It is always a good idea to keep your old supplies in case something breaks or for replacement parts.

Billing

Q: Will my insurance pay for this?

A: We work with numerous insurance companies and are always willing to work with new ones.  Most insurance covers at least a portion of these expenses, however each has specific eligibility guidelines and coverage varies. At Oxygen One, we verify your benefits with your insurance company and notify you of your coverage before the initial equipment set-up or before you receive supplies so you can make an informed decision regarding the equipment.

Q: Why am I getting a bill when my insurance should be paying?

A: If Oxygen One does not get a response from your insurance company within 60 days of submitting the claim, responsibility for the bill is transferred to the patient.

Q: When do I get my bill?

Bills go out the first week of the month and are on blue paper

Q: Does Oxygen One offer payment plans?

Yes.  Please contact our billing department for more information.
